Carrboro

What Makes Carrboro So Cool

Carrboro is the epitome of hip and happening. Trendy bars and music venues, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, cozy coffee shops, and bustling art galleries have made a home in the historic brick and stone buildings downtown, giving residents all the perks of small-town living and easy access to the big-city fun in nearby Durham and Chapel Hill. In fact, this little community is nestled right up against Chapel Hill — just drive around the bend on Franklin Street and you'll find yourself in Carrboro!

Downtown Carrboro

You won't find many restaurant and retail chains in this part of town; for the most part, Downtown Carrboro is all fresh and local. If you're in the mood for a bite to eat, The Spotted Dog boasts a wide vegetarian menu, Open Eye Cafe serves delicious coffee roasted right on site, and One Fish Two Fish Poke brings a taste of Hawaii to the heart of North Carolina. Eager to try the nightlife scene? The best live music and craft beer can be found at The Station (which was once Carrboro's train depot), Steel String Brewery, and Orange County Social Club.

Carr Mill Mall

Though Carrboro has grown a bit because it's so close to Chapel Hill, the town hasn't forgotten its roots. At the Carr Mill Mall, you can get a feel for Carrboro's industrial past when you step inside: hardwood floors, exposed ceilings, and wooden beams give this contemporary mall a funky, cozy vibe. While you're there, grab a bite at Elmo's Diner, shop around at local jewelry stores and boutiques, and buy all your groceries fresh at the Weaver Street Market.

Libba Cotten Bikeway

Getting from Carrboro to Chapel Hill and back is a breeze from the Libba Cotten Bikeway. This paved trail skirts along train tracks (which are still in use today) and cuts right behind Carrboro's downtown, so residents and visitors alike can access some of the best shops, restaurants, and nightlife with ease. From where the bike path spits out on Robertson Street, downtown landmarks like Cat's Cradle, All Day Records, The Station, and Carr Mill Mall are only a few seconds away.
