Hillsborough

What Makes Hillsborough So Cool

Say hello to North Carolina's modern-day Mayberry! At the heart of this small town, quaint brick storefronts with large shop windows beckon to tourists and residents alike, offering a glimpse of what town life was like more than two centuries ago. Winding through the quiet landscape just steps from Downtown Hillsborough is the majestic Eno River, and a little beyond that is the scenic Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area; both landmarks offer some of the best hikes and views in the entire Triangle area. Of course, as expected in an up-and-coming area like Hillsborough, plenty of contemporary shopping centers and brand new homes are mixed in with the town's historic sites and established neighborhoods.

Eno River

One of the most popular destinations in all of Orange County, the Eno River is front and center to daily life in Hillsborough. From the scenic Riverwalk, residents can hike or bike just a stone's throw from the Eno's banks, access several riverfront parks, and bask in the fresh air and cool shade from mature trees. Residents can also learn about Hillsborough's rich past and natural wonders; along the Eno River is a replica of a nearly 300-year-old Occaneechi village, a small castle created entirely out of saplings, and an old cotton mill that's now a beautiful event venue.

Local Farmers' Markets

It's easy to find ingredients straight from the farm in Hillsborough! This town operates two farmers's markets on Saturday mornings — the Hillsborough Farmers' Market on the UNC Health Care Hillsborough campus and the Eno River Farmers' Market in Downtown Hillsborough — and features a co-op grocery store stocked with fresh produce and baked goods. You can even buy food straight from the source during the Piedmont Farm Tour in April.
